''Science is truth, and truth is beautiful.'' So notes Nobel Prize-winning chemist Gertrude Elion, one of seven subjects profiled in Michael Apted's inspiring and infinitely fascinating documentary. The seven, ranging in age from 33 to 81, speak eloquently about how they became interested in their fields, and of their desire to unlock the mysteries of the universe. Some stories are more accessible than others, but even when the talk turns to cognitive research and quantum theory, the passion to explore ''uncharted territory'' is compelling. As theoretical physicist Michio Kaku notes, science can be ''more fascinating than any murder mystery.'' B+ -- Donald Liebenson
