The latest novel from this veteran British scribe reads like a miniature jigsaw puzzle crafted by an intelligent mind over dinner one evening. Based on the real story of Lord Lucan, who disappeared after he was accused of murdering his children's nanny, Aiding and Abetting fictionally locates not just Lucan but a pretender to his title, introducing us to them in the office of a psychiatrist who is also living a duplicitous existence. Though all the pieces of the novel fit together satisfactorily, this slight read feels more like an exercise in problem solving than a potent mystery or interesting character study. B-
