The brand-name playwrights Paula Vogel, Terrence McNally, and Harvey Fierstein who authored these tidy vignettes come out strongly against homophobia. A worthy enough stance, but not always a dramatic one in the case of these all-too-familiar stories about three generations growing up gay in small-town Homer, Conn. The main characters in Common Ground are benign but unmistakable stereotypes earnest walking billboards for tolerance.
