Boring as a dog's ass? That's how Gibson jokingly -- though accurately -- dismissed Bono's (who cowrote and produced) dreary ode to the freak-infested fleabag whose rooftop U2 featured in their ''Where the Streets Have No Name'' video. It also doesn't help that we actually catch Gibson yawning on screen, or that all his humorless detective seems to do is lurch numbly about director Wim Wenders' wunderset in search of a killer. Instead, he finds nothing more than an intentionally irksome menagerie of junkies, punks, scamps, and scoundrels -- including a trash-talking Gloria Stuart -- designed to make his (and our) stay as unpleasant as possible.
