Reel World: The Wachowski Brothers

Paul Rudnick's new film gets a second chance, Goldie Hawn wrote a script, and the guys behind 'American Pie' make a comeback

WRITE AROUND Paul Rudnick's romantic comedy The Gossip Columnist, which has been kicking around in development at Fox, may be getting a new lease on life: Delia Ephron (Hanging Up) has been commissioned to rewrite the story, about a sports columnist turned rag reporter; producer Lawrence Gordon (K-PAX, Tomb Raider) says he expects to see her draft in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, we are very excited to report that Rudnick is moving on to the most fabulous of projects: He's been hired to write the remake of The Stepford Wives for producers Scott Rudin and Donald De Line.

FAMILY MATTERS Goldie Hawn has not only finished her first script, Ashes to Ashes (written with Jeremy Pikser, who cowrote Bulworth), but plans to make her feature directing debut with and star in the Mandalay Entertainment project. ''It's about a pretty nasty gal who has to take her ex-husband's ashes to Nepal,'' says Hawn, who describes Ashes as a ''saga about letting go.'' Hawn has done quite the opposite with her own nearest and dearest: The actress' production company, formerly Cherry Alley, has joined forces with Hawn's children, Oliver and Kate Hudson, and her companion, Kurt Russell, to form Cosmic Entertainment.

SEEKING DIRECTION Larry and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix) are chewing on a list of directors for Carnivore, a horror-comedy about a group of humorous cannibals. The first script the brothers wrote, Carnivore is likely to begin production in 2002, with the brothers producing for Lions Gate...American Pie 2 director J.B. Rogers, first assistant director to Chris and Paul Weitz on the original, is talking to the brothers about directing their Paramount project Guam Goes to the Moon, which Rogers descibes as ''about a group of misfits who do good, kind of like Cool Runnings.''
