Fielding, says Curtis, is like Bridget: ''She'd never try to pretend that she's clever, which, of course, she is.''

Maguire's wish was Grant-ed: ''Hugh always plays good and honest, and [the character of Cleaver] is the opposite.''

The author and the director became v.v. good chums, because ''we had a similar confusion about life,'' says Maguire.

Davies, the P and P screenwriter, has even more ties to Firth: He also scripted 1995's Circle of Friends, which featured the actor.

BJD wasn't the end of Fielding's obsession with Firth. He shows up in the sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, as himself.

Firth and Fielding met in 1996 on the set of Fever Pitch, another Hornby adaptation.

Hugh owes Helly: Curtis says her advice kept Four Weddings from being ''nauseatingly cheerful.''

The friendly liaisons continue: Grant is currently shooting About a Boy, based on Hornby's novel.
