Based on The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy, Michael Winterbottom's measured, overdetermined historical drama has a lot on its mind -- maybe too much. It's a Western set in the snow, a 19th-century English novel transported to the American gold rush, and a morality tale in which every character not only suffers and learns, but symbolizes, too. Peter Mullan stars as a prospector who pays a terrible price to strike it rich; Sarah Polley plays his grown daughter; Wes Bentley is a forward-looking railroad surveyor. B-
