Spike (1989)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Elvis Costello; Genre: Rock

This Japanese duo seems to have ''novelty act'' written all over it: two bubbly, photogenic gals who specialize in sugary tunes with titles like ''This Is the Song of Sweet Sweet Season When Cherry Garcia Blossoms Bloom.'' But while a few songs get lost in translation (the too-cute opener ''Boogie Woogie No. 5''), Spike is an amiable mix of pop-rockers (''Love So Pure'') and smooth dance-floor dirges (''Cosmic*Wonder'') that's hard to dislike.
