Jazz musicians who improvise effectively on both brass and reed instruments are a rare breed, but trumpeter and saxophonist Allmond makes the difficult doubling seem as easy as eating two favorite flavors of ice cream. If his original compositions and group conception tend, at times, toward the mainstream, Allmond's impressive switch-hitting on Short Stories alerts us to a burgeoning talent.
