Stripped of the swoony, gelatinous density of Henry James' language, the latest Merchant Ivory production stands as a watchable but bare-bones adaptation. The early sections, in which the lovely expatriate Charlotte Stant (Uma Thurman) and the Italian aristocrat Prince Amerigo (Jeremy Northam) marry themselves off to wealthy mates (Nick Nolte and Kate Beckinsale) who happen to be father and daughter, are tantalizing in their perverse evocation of incest. Yet the revelations arrive in a way that's as cut-and-dried sordid as anything on Passions. It's hard to shake the feeling that what we're seeing here is the sunset of a genre. B-
