This screen version of Athol Fugard's searing play plumbs the bitter depths of racism. Displaced from a squalid shantytown, a couple bicker and spat, edging, crab-like, toward violence in their brutal, perpetual dance. Glover and Bassett are fine as the warring duo, but Fugard's stiff, Samuel Beckett-style dialogue suffers from filmed-playitis. What's truly mesmerizing here is the spectacular landscape -- by turns lush and barren, flat and mountainous -- in and around South Africa's Cape Town.
