The film's trailer promises a world in which there are ''no laws.'' The soundtrack follows a similar code. Artists as disparate as David Bowie, Lil' Kim, Jose Feliciano, and Christina Aguilera contribute updates of pop standards, many of which wildly couple diverse styles, eras, and song bites, often within the same measure. And if that's not anything-goes enough, auteur Luhrmann even makes Nicole Kidman's singing debut listenable. A difficult album to wrap your head around, but embraceable nonetheless.
