TIME CAPSULE JAN. 12, 1980

FILM AUDIENCES line up to see the divorce drama Kramer vs. Kramer, which will nearly sweep the year's Academy Awards, winning Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Actor. Its stars, Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman (right, with Justin Henry), will win their first Oscars. RUPERT HOLMES' ode to fruity drinks and marriage, ''Escape (The Pina Colada Song),'' tops the pop charts. In 1986, Holmes' Broadway musical The Mystery of Edwin Droodwill garner five Tonys. IN BOOKSTORES, Watergate lingers on, through Kurt Vonnegut's Nixon spoof Jailbird and All the President's Men author Bob Woodward's Supreme Court study, The Brethren. AND IN THE REAL WORLD, Ronald Reagan faces a setback in his bid for the GOP presidential nomination, taking a dip in an Iowa precaucus poll. He would lose in that state, but he would win the presidency come November.
