As this spirited collection proves, Wynton Marsalis and his young associates haven't cornered the market on fresh straight-ahead jazz. Representing the typical fare of this adventurous New York club are some strikingly talented players Omer Avital, Charles Owens, and Jason Lindner, among them whose energy and ideas, as both soloists and arrangers, Jazz Underground: Live at Smalls give us even more hope for the immediate future of jazz.
