As this spirited collection proves, Wynton Marsalis and his young associates haven't cornered the market on fresh straight-ahead jazz. Representing the typical fare of this adventurous New York club are some strikingly talented players — Omer Avital, Charles Owens, and Jason Lindner, among them — whose energy and ideas, as both soloists and arrangers, Jazz Underground: Live at Smalls give us even more hope for the immediate future of jazz. B
