In Nico Icon, filmmaker Susanne Ofteringer charts the rise and fall of this underground pop goddess, from her youth in wartime Germany to her affairs with Lou Reed and Jim Morrison to her slow dissipation via heroin. What emerges is the portrait of a lonely, loveless beauty who willfully wasted away. And the tragedy is not that she died, but that she never really cared about living.
