Having finally shuttered alt-rock's long-running Throwing Muses, Hersh returns to the scene of 1994's stunning Hips and Makers for another set of sparse chamber folk. That record's emotional vortex is slowed here in Strange Angels with songs that look outward as often as in, transforming common trials of home and heart into moments of surreal transcendence. It's too bad about the band. But solo, she's making her strongest music ever. A-
