Lead Performance: Natalie Imbruglia
--
Ever since Alanis Morissette hit the big time by throwing a hissy fit, more and more upstart rockers have been striving to sound fashionably tousled. Imbruglia, a former soap star from down under, has the recipe nailed: edgy guitar riffs, a vaguely hip-hoppish beat, and angst-ridden lyrics (''I can see the perfect sky is torn''). The only thing missing is a hint of genuine emotion in those wispy-waif vocals.
