Musical insurrectionary and former Happy Mondays leader Shaun Ryder surprises on Stupid Stupid Stupid, his Brit punk-funk band's second release. The surprise is that the once freewheeling ensemble has cranked out a lackadaisical effort that verges on dullness. Sure, Ryder & Co. offer irreverent touches, like "Squeaky"'s lyrical tribute to skanky recreational sex. But most of the music is so indistinguishable that the disc rapidly descends from a lively groove into a familiar rut. C+
