SPHERE (PG-13) A soggy sci-fi thriller (from an old book by Michael Crichton) in which Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson play specialists in wet suits who say special things like ''We are definitely not alone.'' Director Barry Levinson pushes the group-therapy aspect of the story, but the hushed mystery of undersea sci-fi eludes him. Stripped of the pleasures of terror, flattened of grandeur, the movie sinks -- a matzo ball rather than a golden globe. D
