Mark Turner (1998)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Mark Turner; Genre: Jazz

MARK TURNER Mark Turner (Warner Bros.) Whether breathing new life into a well-worn standard like ''Autumn in New York'' or skillfully penetrating the open byways of an Ornette Coleman tune, tenor saxophonist Turner uses his major-label debut to cement a sterling reputation already firmly established among fellow musicians. Relying on shrewd phrasing and a warming tone where others would lean on flash, Turner uses understatement to score big. B+
