The Newton Boys (1998)

EW's GRADE
A-

Details Lead Performance: Various Artists; Genre: Soundtracks

Leave it to Slacker director Richard Linklater to commission one of the most coherent, hardest-working soundtracks in recent memory. With help from Abra Moore, Patty Griffin, and others, funky Austin bluegrass trio Bad Livers re-recorded such '20s jazz classics as ''After You've Gone'' and ''Right or Wrong.'' Buoyant stride piano, vivacious horns, plaintive fiddle, and dizzying banjo make this album the next best thing to a raucous night in a Southern speakeasy.
