Maybe as penance for releasing Tom Arnold's recent dud, the studio's now releasing the superior original feature based on the World War II sitcom. Among its merits: Borgnine's sly bonhomie as P.T. 73 skipper Quinton McHale, Conway's inspired slap-shtick as Ensign Charles Parker, and Flynn's sidesplitting apoplexy as Capt. Wallace Binghamton. Plus, Claudine Longet plays a mademoiselle whom Conway must rescue from her verbally abusive French beau (George Kennedy!). As you might expect, McHale's Navy loses nothing in its transfer to the small screen. B
