McHale's Navy

EW's GRADE
B

Details Genre: Comedy; With: Ernest Borgnine, Tim Conway and Joe Flynn

Maybe as penance for releasing Tom Arnold's recent dud, the studio's now releasing the superior original feature based on the World War II sitcom. Among its merits: Borgnine's sly bonhomie as P.T. 73 skipper Quinton McHale, Conway's inspired slap-shtick as Ensign Charles Parker, and Flynn's sidesplitting apoplexy as Capt. Wallace Binghamton. Plus, Claudine Longet plays a mademoiselle whom Conway must rescue from her verbally abusive French beau (George Kennedy!). As you might expect, McHale's Navy loses nothing in its transfer to the small screen. B
