Barney's Great Adventure: The Movie (1998)

Surprisingly bearable. The filmmakers, doubtless aware that parents will be stuck in the theater for the duration (instead of turning on the TV and fleeing the room), have eased up on the kiddie show's patented get-the-gun sugariness. There's a story line of sorts (between songs, Barney and his human pals find a cosmic egg that — oh, c'mon, do you really need to know?), but it's simple enough that my 3-year-old didn't have to grill Daddy at every plot turn. Diversions for the jaded include a lively Busby Berkeley-esque dance number, a visit to a bird lady whose house is stuffed with colorful bric-a-brac, and one thankfully wiseass older kid (Trevor Morgan). Barney's Great Adventure is insipid, but it's also harmless, and, besides, why shouldn't toddlers enjoy the pleasures of their own kitsch? B-
