Music for Airports

Details Lead Performance: Bang On a Can; Genres: Experimental, Instrumental

Sure sounds like a perverse idea: re-creating Brian Eno's pioneering 1978 ambient suite — four cuts of translucently soothing bleeps and ahhs — with a small orchestra and chorus of New York alterna-music stalwarts. For the most part, though, it works; the unpredictability of the one-take ''live'' recording warms up Eno's swatches of sound, making for a futuristic soundscape that's oddly nostalgic. Think of Music for Airports as the aural equivalent of human breath on a frosty winter window: You can see the structure of the crystals even as they melt away. A-
