His Brazil — also on DVD — may be funnier and more distinctive, but director Terry Gilliam is always strong on the visuals, and the DVD of 12 Monkeys is a keeper thanks to audio commentary from Gilliam and, especially, the 87-minute documentary The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys. Most ''making-ofs'' are short and politely dull; this blunt and lively effort has a nifty, Monty Python-esque prologue and everything from disastrous test screenings to the aftermath of a screaming fight between Gilliam and producer Charles Roven. Watch it first and you'll enjoy the movie even more. The extras: B+
