The Beat Assassinated

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: DJ Cam

On his Stateside debut, The Beat Assassinated, this Gallic groove-meister says en garde to the dance-floor avant-garde. Unlike such trip-hop turntable-ists as DJ Shadow, Cam simply wants to cold-rock the party. Whatever genre he essays — rap, dub, drum-and-bass — his death-defying beats make clear that, above all, he's a slave to the rhythm. Records this slamming could make ''Vive la France!'' the next party chant. B+
