SWITCHBACK Dennis Quaid, Danny Glover, R. Lee Ermey (1997, Paramount, R, $101.99) A grim federal agent (Quaid, doing his best Harrison Ford imitation) hunts a smiling serial killer (Glover, doing an uninspired imitation of himself). The fed must track his quarry alone because, for some reason, just about no one else in the movie has the slightest interest in pursuing the most obvious leads. In the end, all Quaid needs to do to solve the case is plunge into oversize physical heroics, which, unfortunately, don't measure up on the small screen. If transparent contrivance were the hallmark of great suspense, then writer-director Jeb Stuart would be the genre's new master. C-
