YONDER Siri Hustvedt (Holt, $20) Novelist Hustvedt (The Blindfold, The Enchantment of Lily Dahl) writes crystalline prose with unwavering attention to details. The first piece in this debut nonfiction collection, a memoir of growing up in Minnesota and Norway, shines with the luminosity of a fairy tale. Other essays include an examination of a Vermeer painting at the National Gallery of Art, rereadings of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend, and a meditation on erotic love in the PC age. But what limits her powers of observation is a detachment that ultimately provokes reflection without passion. B
