As a natty San Francisco physician who's none too thrilled to find he has the ability to talk to animals, Eddie Murphy has his talent contained in a very small space: He plays the reactive straight man to a bunch of winged and furry wisenheimers. But the animals themselves -- including a bullying dog (Norm Macdonald), a kibitzing guinea pig (Chris Rock), and a morose tiger (Albert Brooks) -- are raunchily funny. And director Betty Thomas demonstrates her expertise at keeping indulgence at bay in even the coarsest of comic situations.
