JEFF BRIDGES

The 25 Greatest Actors Of The '90s

"I did American Heart right after Terminator 2 and had no idea what I was getting into. Jeff made it so much easier. Before one scene he pulled me aside and said, 'Trust me, let's both scream at the top of our lungs.' Right after that was our best take." — EDWARD FURLONG

The anti-leading man—and we mean that as a compliment. We don't want to see him in screwball romances, and we don't want him lucky in love (check out 1996's The Mirror Has Two Faces; on second thought, don't). We want the generous, reeling airplane-crash survivor of Fearless. Despite a resume chock-full of artfully constructed turns, Bridges, 48, remains vastly underrated—which could be one reason his work often seems like a revelation.

DON'T MISS: The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), American Heart (1993), Fearless (1993)

NEXT: The thriller Arlington Road (no release date scheduled); Albert Brooks' The Muse (in preproduction)
