''Robert De Niro is a true chameleon. He has the ability and discipline to disappear completely into the character that he's playing, and he plays those characters without ego or vanity.'' -- SHARON STONE

Sure, he could play a normal guy if he wanted to. But why would he? He does wounded, twisted, maniacal, hard-assed, and demented better than anyone else (The Godfather, Part II; Taxi Driver; Raging Bull). And unlike so many lions of American acting, De Niro, 54, hasn't succumbed to laziness in the '90s; he's never rested on his mannerisms -- perhaps because he has none. Ultimately, the two-time Academy Award winner is the world's most famous character actor.

DON'T MISS: Awakenings (1990), Cape Fear (1991), Heat (1995)

NEXT: The political thriller Ronin (Oct. 2); the crime comedy Analyze This (February '99)
