POLICE STORY Jackie Chan, Brigitte Lin (1998, New Line, PG-13, $29.98) One of Chan's early hits gets the New Line makeover for U.S. audiences. This martial-arts ''Dirty Harry,'' first released in Hong Kong in 1985, combines Jackie's usual slapstick and action, climaxing in a department-store dustup, in which shopping carts and clothes racks become props in spectacularly acrobatic kung fu choreography. Unlike early editions from smaller labels, this version boasts a crisp picture and acceptable dubbing (acceptable being as good as Chinese-to-English dubbing gets).
New Line has also trimmed some of the belabored comedy bits. Hong Kong action purists will probably object. The rest of us won't, now that the film moves more quickly from one headlong stunt to another.
