Any basketball-related documentary nowadays must contend with the gargantuan shadow of Hoop Dreams; this one manages to find a sizable patch of sunlight all its own. Less ambitious than its predecessor, Danielle Gardner's simple, moving portrait of a community focuses on the interaction between volunteer neighborhood coach Kenny Jones and his inner-city teen players, Kenny's Kings. An unforgettable ''character,'' Kenny proves that if you've seen one hoop doc, you haven't necessarily seen 'em all. B+
