STARRING Kurt Russell, Jason Scott Lee, Connie Nielsen, Gary Busey, Michael Chiklis

DIRECTED BY Paul Anderson

'I love westerns,'' says Anderson (Mortal Kombat), ''but nobody's interested in them anymore. But if you replace the horses with spaceships...'' That's right, kids, a sci-fi Western! Oddly enough, it's the only one of its genre coming out this fall. Russell plays the tough, moody title character, an over-the-hill fighting man consigned to a dreary frontier planet by his military masters. Anderson advises viewers to watch Russell's eyes: ''He doesn't have much dialogue. Compared to Kurt's character, Clint Eastwood is f -- -ing Hamlet.'' (Oct. 23)

THE LOWDOWN A sci-fi Western? A laughable concept, except that it's written by David Webb Peoples -- cowriter of Blade Runner and the pen behind Unforgiven.
