Step Inside This House, the sprawling but stirring double-album departure, finds Lyle Lovett covering tunes by his favorite Texas songwriters, including four each by the recently departed Townes Van Zandt and Walter Hyatt. Not surprisingly, Lovett makes the compositions by these kindred spirits his own, and the songs' mix of naked introspection and ironic whimsy offer a compelling glimpse into the influences that shaped his complex artistic persona.
