MRS. DALLOWAY Vanessa Redgrave, Natascha McElhone (1998, BMG Independents, PG-13, $97.99) The panoramic scene setting and seamless stream-of-consciousness narrative of Virginia Woolf's novel are as resistant to film adaptation as poetry or Proust. Still, director Marleen Gorris (Antonia's Line) extracts bits of sweetness and sadness from Woolf's 1925 classic about a day in the bourgeois life of Clarissa Dalloway, a fiftysomething Londoner recalling the loves of her youth as she prepares to host a party. Much of the story -- especially a subplot involving a shell-shocked war veteran -- plays with painful inelegance, but Redgrave, as the older Clarissa, and McElhone, as the younger, radiate a compensating grace. C+
