ONE TRUE THING (R) Renee Zellweger plays an ambitious young journalist whose cold urban heart is thawed in the course of caring for Meryl Streep as the dying warm suburban mother whose domesticity she had previously disdained. Director Carl Franklin makes sure even the tone deaf hear the music of redemption in this weeper, in which characters don't speak to each other so much as instruct. But what might have been a depressing disease-of-the-week TV drama is redeemed by a gold-plated, non-TV cast: Streep and Zellweger capture the unsalvable itch that exists between mothers and daughters. And William Hurt, as the self-involved academic paterfamilias, works with unmannered restraint and mature intensity. B-
