It could also be because, increasingly, TV actresses are the new supermodels. In fact, the gap between actresses and catwalkers has never been narrower, says Vogue's Katherine Betts: ''People are really judging them by what they're wearing. They feel a lot of pressure to look good.'' And, arguably, the pressure on Flockhart has been even greater. After all, no other actress has been appointed de facto postfeminist spokesmodel, as Flockhart, qua McBeal, was in a June 29 TIME cover story. Now there seems to be a groundswell to make her the poster girl for eating disorders, unfairly or not.

In recent days, Flockhart has been trying to make light of, well, getting light. Besides the "bucket of chicken" remark, she thanked an awards-ceremony audience ''for dinner,'' and even called in to L.A.'s Kroq radio — in her Ally persona — to discuss her well-being. When DJs Kevin and Bean asked if they could send her a box of Twinkies, the actress declined. She preferred Ring-Dings.
