BELOVED (R) In this somberly forbidding, nearly three-hour adaptation of Toni Morrison's novel, Sethe (Oprah Winfrey), a former slave, is haunted by demons and shadowed by memories of murder and survival. Winfrey's performance is full of stoic anger, and individual moments have ferocity and pull, yet you're always aware of them as moments. Arty and literal-minded, directed with indignant high seriousness by Jonathan Demme, Beloved is undeniably a labor of devotion and intelligence. In the end, though, a labor is just what it is.
