It's a fool's errand when a small-time Dublin gangster (Brendan Gleeson) and a sad-sack young ex-con (Peter McDonald) set out on a cross-country trip to bring back a slick operator who's been sleeping with the Mob boss' wife. But while this odd couple of gangland gofers have their share of low-key comic screw-ups on the road (a klutzy kidnapping, a bumbling shoot-out, a knack for stealing the wrong car), the more winning comedy in I Went Down comes from their fitfully burgeoning friendship. Just their conversations in the car a world apart from showy tough-guy talk we've been hearing a bit much of make this little-seen import worth a rent. B+
