The Land Girls

The Women's Land Army (a company dedicated to filling the work boots vacated by men busy fighting overseas during WWII) rates something slightly more dignified than this sappy tale of three young things — one slutty (Friel), one snooty (Weisz), one tediously pensive (McCormack, forever staring grimly at the horizon) — mobilizing in pursuit of a farmer's earthy son (Steven Mackinstosh). It's as if A League of Their Own had forsaken baseball entirely to concentrate on attempted seductions of coach Tom Hanks. The misplaced focus in The Land Girls might be forgivable if the romantic scenes crackled and sparked, but every time things heat up a bit, there's an abrupt cut to the next morning's sunrise. C
