Roots of Rap: Sugar Hill Records

EW's GRADE
B

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genre: Musical

A half-hour sampler of old-school antics, Roots of Rap unearths some crummily produced clips by Melle Mel, the Sugar Hill Gang, and Grandmaster Flash, Ur-B-boys who created a funk so furious that the Beastie Boys still stay current by giving it props. The styles on display — South Bronx street fashion, disco tackiness, Egyptomania flash — are a tickling dispatch from Planet Rock. Laughs aside, the rhythms make the body rock. B
