All About

A Bug's Life
B

A BUG'S LIFE (G) The second computer-animated feature from the wizards at Pixar is a hellzapoppin creature-feature jamboree. As technology, it's amazing; the images have an eerie, sculpted vitality that literally seduces your eye into forgetting that it's watching animation. Yet the gags explode with an intricate slapstick freneticism that walks a thin line between exuberant and exhausting. Flik, a renegade ant, heads off into the wilds to round up some warrior bugs, all to defend his colony from a tribe of grasshopper bullies. The best he can come up with is a motley troupe of flea-circus performers. Some of the jokes are great, but the insects, splendid and funny as they are to look at, remain strangely one-note characters. A Bug's Life is so obsessed with wowing you, in every corner of every frame, that as a movie it doesn't quite breathe. B
