Let's Sing a Song of Christmas (1998)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Lead Performance: Spike Jones; Genres: Comedy, Holiday

Not nearly as inventive or loony as Spike Jones' take on The Nutcracker Suite (included on the Thomas Pynchon annotated compilation Spiked!), the 1956 LP Let's Sing a Song of Christmas finds the ambitious novelty composer arranging Christmas classics with a reasonably straight face. You do get the occasional kazoo melody, horn chortle, and percussive sneeze, plus kiddie-drag like ''All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth).'' Otherwise it's choral-style holiday schmaltz long on the treacle. C
