It's easy to gripe that '90s pop has become pasteurized and fake, but proto-mod Paul Weller has spent the decade crafting simple, heartfelt, old-fashioned rock-soul that stands apart from the bogus phenomenettes foisted upon the market. Modern Classics might as well be retitled Lost Classics, considering the Brit's sliver of a profile in America. But for those pogo-era fans who've lost track, it's proof that Weller did indeed keep the fires burning long after he broke up the Jam. A-
