THE PREACHER'S WIFE (PG) Whitney Houston doesn't get enough opportunity to let loose in this gospelized remake of the 1947 cockle-warmer The Bishop's Wife. When her fretting husband (Courtney B. Vance) prays for guidance, he's rewarded with a visit from a natty angel (Denzel Washington) -- who, as a bonus, reminds the missus of what it's like to be admired by a cute guy. Alas, everything self-contained and awkward in Houston bumps up against everything that's reserved in Washington, and no sparks ignite. C+
