Welcome to the Dollhouse (1996)

Part of you will want to leave the room screaming, ''I can't take any more!'' And part of you couldn't stand to miss one second of this dry evocation of the perpetual car wreck that is adolescence. Writer-director Todd Solondz creates the perfect vehicle for a two-way street with antiheroine Dawn Weiner (newcomer Matarazzo in a spot-on performance), known somewhat justifiably as Weinerdog in her junior high. Yet no matter how ruthless the abuse from schoolmates and creepy family alike, she never becomes just a victim: Welcome to the Dollhouse's alternate title might be Blueprint for Making a Serial Killer. In movies, as in life, the truth hurts. But it often leaves a fascinating bruise.
