All that glitters doesn't always get a Golden Globe nomination. Just ask Goldie Hawn. Though her scene-stealing performance in The First Wives Club drew praise, it failed to get a Globe nomination -- considered a barometer for the Academy Awards. Nods for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical instead went to Glenn Close (101 Dalmatians), Madonna (Evita), Frances McDormand (Fargo), Debbie Reynolds (Mother), and Barbra Streisand (The Mirror Has Two Faces).

Several big names were also shut out for Best Actress in a Drama -- including Portrait of a Lady's Nicole Kidman -- but Hawn's Globe omission was perhaps the most surprising. A nod seemed predestined after ''comeback'' talk began. ''Remember, the movie was an ensemble piece,'' says a Hawn spokeswoman. ''And that can and does affect nominations.'' Or maybe it's because Hawn's Wives character, actress Elise Elliot, gets a laugh at the Globes' expense. (Arthur Cohen, Paramount's president of worldwide marketing, says there were no ''sour grapes'' over the joke.)

Will Oscar follow the Golden rule? Stay tuned: Academy nominations will be announced Feb. 11.
