APHEX TWIN Richard D. James (Sire) It makes sense that the one-man-band ambient auteur would name his latest album after himself -- it's his quirkiest, most personal work. The burbling instrumental squiggle pop James pioneered is here, but tracks like ''4'' and ''Girl/Boy Song'' reveal a new warmth and wistfulness, thanks to synthesized string sections that sound radiantly real. If machines could joke or cry, this is how they would sound. A-
