THE END OF ALICE A.M. Homes (Scribner, $12, 1996) The ''voracious pedophile'' and convicted killer who narrates this attempted tour de force writes as though he's swallowed the Oxford English Dictionary, but that doesn't make him any more persuasive. His creepy correspondence with an unnamed 19-year-old female college sophomore (who shares his pedophilic leanings) drives a much-hyped but ultimately sour and embarrassing novel. D
